The '''Collaboration of the month''' is a way to get many contributors working on one article at once, often to get it ready for an upcoming event or a nomination for destination of the month. While anyone can edit any article at any time, this provides a way to highlight specific articles allowing many contributors to help improve them together.

Current collaboration of the month

Copenhagen

Let's try to get another showcase article like San Fransisco, Chicago etc. under the belt of the wikitravel community. I'm currently in the process of getting all the districts up to guide level status (it's also always nice to have a target to work against). And this means that we can get the targets very specific, and have something to work on that doesn't require too specific knowledge about the destination. I'd prefer March a something a little while of, to have time to finish - I'm current stalled since I have to get time to visit the northern suburbs, to get a buy shopping section finished, should get around to that after christmas is over and done with.

  • '''Proofreading/copy editing''' - I'm not a native speaker, and especially in my written English, I make stupid mistakes and occasional "Danglish" entries, so the districts could use some proofreading and editing. again, I'll be around answer any questions.
  • ''And some secondary tasks:'' <br>

  • Lead article - I need help building the main article, as I've noticed this is definitively not one of my strong points (much better with specifics), I'll be around most days to answer any questions for anyone who doesn't know the city may have, just leave a message on my talk page or at sertmann AT gmail DOT com
  • Identify any missing entries - Anyone who is familiar with city, please comb through the article and districts and identify any missing entries, and just add them (i'll try to fill out anything missing from any entries, so even just the name of a place would be fine) or leave a message at the city/district talk page.
  • Identify needs for clarification/push for star. I'd like people to read through the articles and identify anything/any entries that needs to be extended/clarified for someone who doesn't know anything about the city beforehand, and anything you would comment as objections to a Star nomination/Destination of the Month, so I have a chance to address these points, before nomination.
  • : - Sertmann 17:33, 6 November 2008 (EST) ::Looks like a solid nomination. I would try and help out a bit. <font color="#339989">'''edmontonenthusiast [ee]'''</font> <sup><small><font color="#8848d7">'''.T.A.L.K.'''</font></small></sup> 12:33, 23 December 2008 (EST).

:::(Hey, count those three edits I did in February [http://wikitravel.org/wiki/en/index.php?title=Copenhagen%2FVestegnen&diff=1078150&oldid=1040072] towards the results!) --Peter <small>Talk</small> 16:30, 4 March 2009 (EST)

:Creating maps (unless the nominator is offering to do so) is a task to steep for cotm collaborations, and adding missing entries is very difficult for contributors unfamiliar with the location. The other three tasks are good, but can you think of any more useful tasks to keep us all busy? Aside from that, we don't have another cotm lined up for April, and you mentioned before that these articles were not ready—will they be? --Peter <small>Talk</small> 00:47, 21 March 2009 (EDT)

::Well, er den rede? --Peter <small>Talk</small> 15:10, 30 March 2009 (EDT)

::: Nej, den er ikke :) trying to remember my loose ends on this, I think it should be perfectly feasible, to get this ready for next month, but Copenhagen/Amager, Copenhagen/Frederiksberg and Copenhagen/Vestegnen is still missing info in some of the more boring sections, and a day or two of exploration, now that spring is coming along, there is no need to put that off any more, as it should be quite enjoyable playing tourist in the sunshine. --Stefan (sertmann) <small>Talk</small> 15:21, 30 March 2009 (EDT)

:::: Deleted the mapping part, as I found a method to do this, without the need of my broken linux box. --Stefan (sertmann) <small>Talk</small> 15:25, 30 March 2009 (EDT)

    Nominate

Think carefully before making a nomination. A successful collaboration of the month must be more than just an article you would like to see improved. In particular, it's a bad idea to nominate articles that lack enough content—most collaborators won't have intimate knowledge of the destination, although they can do style edits and fill in some of the blanks with very basic research.

Nominations most likely to be collaborative successes are those that have clearly defined areas for improvement, are of interest to a wide range of people, and that are already pretty well developed. Particularly good choices for nomination are articles that could quickly become options for the Destination of the Month, or Off the Beaten Path featured articles.

When nominating, describe exactly what you hope would come of a Collaboration. Explain why you think it would be a successful collaboration. ''(Not why you would like it improved!)'' Then leave a list of several bullet points detailing exactly how other contributors can help with the collaboration. The bullet points should be very concrete, and should detail basic tasks that anyone can help with. Collaborative tasks should be geared towards the goal of having a '''large number of contributors doing a small amount of work'''. Examples of good collaborative tasks include:

  • Listingify all the listings ''(A task that anyone can do in small quantities spread out over the month.)''
  • Fill in basic details for listings ''(Anyone can spend five minutes on a given day to look up addresses and phone numbers for a small subsection of listings.)''
  • Add images ''(It is easy enough for an interested collaborator to look up one image on flickr [http://flickr.com] or Wikimedia Commons [http://commons.wikimedia.org], upload it to shared, and add it to an article in about 10 minutes.)''
  • Copyediting ''(A lot of articles have issues with basic grammar, spelling, and style, particularly when written by non-native speakers. This is another good task easy to finish when spread out across a number of contributors, each contributing in small chunks.)''
  • '''Take pains to avoid''' listing tasks that require either a significant committal of time or in-depth knowledge of the destination from individual contributors:

#research beyond basic information (like contact information for a listing), #original writing, #map making (aside from more simple region maps), #devising new districts.

These are tasks for contributors with a special interest in a particular destination, not for contributors simply interested in devoting a small amount of time in support of the collaboration. If these types of tasks are to work, the nominator will have to volunteer to do them, or find someone beforehand who is willing.

Because a month is a long time, and we can get a lot of work done when many contributors are at work, consider whether the tasks for your nomination will take longer than just one week. Huge city articles can be ideal for nominations, as can regions that already have well developed city articles.

Use the following format for nominations:

    <pre>===Chicken===

This article has a ton of great content, but is poorly formatted, is full of basic errors, and most listings lack addresses. Chicken will be the host of the 20XX Winter Olympics, so it would be useful to get the article into good shape beforehand. There's a lot to be done, but the work is basic and can be divided easily over many contributors.

  • '''Task 1''' — rationale
  • '''Task 2''' — rationale
  • '''Task 3''' — rationale
  • '''Task 4''' — rationale
  • ~~~~</pre>

    Select

We decide which articles to select for the collaboration of the month through discussion. To weigh in, add your argument next to a bullet point below the nomination. It's also appropriate to suggest here when the article should be featured.

  • content yet for us to work on. ~~~~</pre>

Note that objections must relate only to the nomination's potential for success as a collaboration of the month, ''not'' to one's own interest in the destination.

    Scheduling

If a nomination has the support of the community, it can simply be added to the upcoming queue at a time deemed appropriate in the nomination discussion. Priority will be given to articles based on the strength of the nomination, urgency of the collaboration (with respect to upcoming large international events), and the goal of ensuring that we have a good balance of collaborations on articles from all parts of the world.

    Archiving

Move the nomination entry for previously featured articles to the article's talk page. Strike goals (using <nowiki><strike></strike></nowiki> tags) that were accomplished.

Move unsuccessful nominations to the Wikitravel:Collaboration of the month/Slush pile.

After they have been featured as the collaboration of the month, move the original nomination to Wikitravel:Previous collaborations.

    Unscheduled nominations

    Edmonton

Edmonton is a ravishing city that most people don't think of and never look beyond the first glance. Anyways, I think it would be successful because it has definitely caught the attention of the website and I can tell I have changed many people's opinion of the city. They could help so much & I have asked numourous people if they would like to help, tons said yes, others still have no reply, but still. Because of that, I think it could be successful because tons of people will be working and people seeing the work will get involved. Personally, it's biggest fault right now is the grammar and style, I still screw that up sometimes leaving typos all over the place. Not to mention, I think it has been a while since a Canadian place got as much coverage as Edmonton is getting - if at all. I really hope to make this a viable DotM and leave the tracks to what could be some stars (Namely South Central, Central, and Main article pages). I am not asking for actual stars, but begin the path. From that, I believe personally that Edmonton needs:

  • A '''well written''' Eat section in the main article - I don't know it just seems blah
  • Make sure everything's''' mos'''
  • '''MAPS MAPS MAPS''' - we've got a few down/under construction, but we need: LRT Map, South Central Map, East Central Map, North End Map. Each person has to be willing to update it.
  • Create an article for '''Edmonton International Airport'''. That means research information and create maps and all that stuff into a new article just on it. We can make it like O Hare or Heathrow, even though Edmonton is smaller. This will solve the Edmonton-Leduc fu ss in every way.
  • Get '''basic details''' to empty listings
  • '''Research info on things''' and fill in listings (Wikitravel:listings )
  • If anyone has good''' photos''' - upload them
  • Fill in the '''Edmonton capital region''' page because its kinda bony
  • Complete '''coverage''' for Sherwood Park, Saint Albert, Leduc, Nisku, Spruce Grove, and Morinville
  • Ultimately, I think we can do this. Most of it is just researching and grammar. For the maps, I can give all the information as to what to do first so it's not like you won't know. I hope this is the proper format and that people vote for it. Lets do this - a successful COTM! I would like to make it for January. <font color="#339989">'''edmontonenthusiast [ee]'''</font> <small><font color="#8848d7">'''.T.A.L.K.'''</font></small> 12:59, 21 December 2008 (EST).

Ultimately, I think we can do this. Most of it is just Listingify and grammar. For the maps, I can give all the information as to what to do first so it's not like you won't know, but again, nobody needs to do a map.

:A whole bunch of problems with this nomination. First, several of the tasks are meaningless: "get basic details" (does that mean contact info?), "research info on ''things''," "''Fill in'' the ECR page," "A well written eat section" (what does that mean, what are you looking for, and how can non-Edmontonians help with this?). Several of the tasks also are simply bad tasks for a nomination, as called out above. Asking CotM participants to do original research and writing is rarely productive. That's a big task, and a labor of love—if people don't have an especial interest in the destination, they're not likely to do this work. Ditto maps. Asking participants to "create and article" is a bad idea for the same reason. In this case, creating an article for Edmonton International would be inappropriate, because as a rule we do not create articles for airports unless they are city-sized—only for the largest airports in the world.

:As for why we should CotM Edmonton? The fact that it has been getting so much work done and so much attention does incline me to feature it. But it's already up to DotM status (IMO), so we don't need to work on it for that. We could conceivably work on this as a CotM to get it ready for a star nomination, but the articles are still too far from that goal. Once the districts are at guide status, this might be a good article to feature for that purpose. The useful tasks then, I would think, would be updating listings on maps and copyediting. I'm inclined to hold on to this nomination, but hold off on scheduling it. --Peter <small>Talk</small> 04:18, 23 December 2008 (EST) ::Thank you Peter, I thought I was doing it okay. I will re work the tasks. <font color="#339989">'''edmontonenthusiast [ee]'''</font> <small><font color="#8848d7">'''.T.A.L.K.'''</font></small> 12:28, 23 December 2008 (EST).

  • Make sure everything's properly''' mos'''
  • Grammar - for the most part, I have terrible grammar and I would like that fixed
  • Put listings in order
  • Make sure everything is in proper district
  • '''MAPS MAPS MAPS''' - I understand this is a big task so if people don't want to do any then that is fine. If anyone is interested, they can get a hold of me.
  • Make sure all lisitngs have addresses, websites, etc.
  • If anyone has good''' photos''' - upload them
  • Fill in the '''Edmonton capital region''' if you know any information on it.
  • '''coverage''' for Sherwood Park, Saint Albert, Leduc, Nisku, Spruce Grove, and Morinville. I mean they are quite off the radar, so maybe people could see if they know something or if a listing doesn't have address or, if they feel like it, they can research - but I won't make anyone.
  • :::I redid it, I hope it is ok now. <font color="#339989">'''edmontonenthusiast [ee]'''</font> <sup><small><font color="#8848d7">'''.T.A.L.K.'''</font></small></sup> 12:40, 23 December 2008 (EST).

    Calgary

Calgary is a bustling metropolis that needs more attention on this beautiful webpg. This city would have some nice benefit if people got more involved in the city. As of late other than me and a few texugo edits, nothing has really happened. I think Calgary would benefit greatly from districting, and although I could lead it all, I'd need more help than Edmonton so a CotM would be a perfect time. It seems lately Edmonton is the only city in Canada that really hoards the Recent changes , maybe Calgary could take a share. What I would like resulted is DotM material, good districts, and more involvement by community. What Calgary needs:

  • Clean up: make everything '''mos'''
  • '''District''' - I have an idea of the districts , but we need to do it and make sure that each district is good quality.
  • '''Pictures''' - scan WM Commons for photos
  • '''Participation'''
  • '''Listingify'''
  • '''Add all the information you can'''
  • '''MAPS''' - districts, downtown Calgary, beltline, and district maps
  • To me, it just looks kinda messy and I'd like that changed. Hopefully this could be successful. <font color="#339989">'''edmontonenthusiast [ee]'''</font> <small><font color="#8848d7">'''.T.A.L.K.'''</font></small> 15:14, 21 December 2008 (EST).

: i'd prefer if we slushed either Edmonton or Calgary for a while, to get a bit more varied geographically. --Stefan (sertmann) <small>Talk</small> 21:57, 22 December 2008 (EST)

::No need to slush nominations over scheduling issues—we can just leave them unscheduled until an appropriate amount of time has passed. There are, however, several problems with this nomination. Districting and mapping are explicitly called out as bad tasks to include in a nomination, because the first requires intimate knowledge of the location, and the latter requires a huge time commitment. Tasks like "participation" and "add all the information you can" are worthless—if a task is not concrete, it's not worth including in the nomination.

::MoSing, "listingification," and image hunting could occupy some worthwhile CotM time, but I don't see a very clear rationale to give this article preference over others. Listings are too few for this to become a DotM, and adding listings is not a good task for a CotM. I'd consider slushing this one for lack of a compelling reason to feature it as a collaboration. --Peter <small>Talk</small> 04:04, 23 December 2008 (EST) :::THanks peter, again I will rework it. Stefan, I didn't say they would be month to month of alberta metropolis's. One could be in march the other in december, I never said they'd be close. <font color="#339989">'''edmontonenthusiast [ee]'''</font> <small><font color="#8848d7">'''.T.A.L.K.'''</font></small> 12:31, 23 December 2008 (EST).

    Durban

From what I hear, it's a nice destination in South Africa and popular amongst backpackers. According to [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Durban its Wikipedia article] it is the 3rd largest city in SA & has several nice places for tourists. Most importantly, however, it will be one of the host cities of the 2010 FIFA World Cup...a very good reason to work and improve this article.
  • Needs a map.
  • The Bus section is quite unsightly.
  • The Eat, Drink, & Sleep sections need a bit to be added: addresses, phone numbers, and more listings.
  • Needs another picture or two.
  • See & Do sections need addresses and many need descriptions.
  • Essentially, this has the potential to be a very nice article and we should collaborate to fix/improve it in time for the World Cup. AHeneen 19:18, 5 February 2009 (EST)

  • '''Don't Support''' We maybe should see if we can revive this project first, and if that be the case, then maybe the World Cup cities is a worthy project, but for now it seems pretty much that taking this on, would be repeating past mistakes, a bit to much local knowledge required for my taste, and I don't see anyone jumping in on this. --Stefan (sertmann) <small>Talk</small> 19:27, 5 February 2009 (EST)
  • Accra

Sadly, as to be expected, very few African destinations are above the "usable" status. Although there have been various African destinations in the OtBP position, I believe only 1 has ever made the main feature category.

Because there is a general outline, it doesn't seem like such a difficult task for people who have NOT been there to contribute to, which is nice for the CotM. I think the main problems are:

  • Not enough information in the "Understand" and "History" categories (anyone can look up general information like this)
  • Lacking descriptions of the attractions. (Once again, with attractions listed, descriptions should be easy to add, even for those who don't know the city)
  • Listingify - phone numbers and such need to be added for current listings.
  • Formatting. The listings that are already there need to be properly formatted.
  • Pictures. Even with good information, it's awfully boring with no pictures...
  • So, what do you think about Accra? ChubbyWimbus 11:03, 21 February 2009 (EST)

:'''Don't support'''. All these tasks are good, but I think the article is too short to support a successful cotm. Now a cotm for the whole country of Ghana, on the other hand, is intriguing. We could revamp the confusing regions hierarchy, and we have enough active members of the Wikitravel:Regions Maps Expedition to produce a region map. Proofing and mosing the rest of the country's articles might be an ideal use of a cotm. --Peter <small>Talk</small> 01:09, 21 March 2009 (EDT) ::A country feature might be interesting. I suppose it could lead people to update Accra, and other cities, as well. I wonder what others think about featuring the nation instead of the city? ChubbyWimbus 11:31, 22 March 2009 (EDT)

    Yangshuo

China's biggest natural tourist draw, fantastic karst landscape. Also a major stop on the backpacker trail through Asia and a place where quite a few travellers settle down, open bars, etc.

The article needs a fair bit of work:

  • settle the discussion at Talk:Yangshuo#Tour_guides and either format listings right or delete them
  • general MoS work
  • :My major concern with this nomination is that there is not enough work to be done for a collaboration of the month. I think it would turn into a "collaboration of the day," which would not be good for the cotm project. Perhaps work on this article could be combined with something else? --Peter <small>Talk</small> 00:39, 13 March 2009 (EDT)

:: It could be combined with nearby Guilin. However, you may be right. There might not be enough work for CotM. Pashley 00:44, 13 March 2009 (EDT)

    Zhuhai

Another Chinese city with a lot of tourism. Good article in many ways, but needs work.
  • Add a city/districts map.
  • Currently has many photos. Some excellent, some should be deleted.
  • Remove repeated text; e.g. same description of BBQ street in "districts" and "eat".
  • General MoS overhaul.
  • Mauritius

This article has lots of great content, but is poorly formatted, needs to be broken into regions, and most listings lack addresses and other basic info (like city). This is a great tropical destination and I saw a TV show a while ago about this island which presented this island as an astounding destination.

  • '''Create Regional/City Articles & Move Listings''' ? The author(s) has already broken down "See" section into regions which ought to be created (there is only one article [the capital] of all the regions/cities/other destinations!). You don't need the firsthand knowledge to create the articles, simply rephrase a couple lines from Wikipedia and then move the listings to them...stub/outline articles are better than no articles!
  • '''Formatting''' ? In addition to the first rationale, there are lots of non-standard ways the author(s) has formatted most sections.
  • '''Sleep Cleanup/Expansion''' ? The sleep section has many listings, but is not broken down by price, many lack a description, and they should be moved to appropriate regions/cities. Fortunately for us, all of them have a website listed in the article.
  • '''Better Map'''?The map is a simple map of the island with cities and a scale. The map could use a key (or at least get rid of the white section at left), and someone could easily search online for a map of the island with good destinations (ie. parks, points of attraction) to stick on the map so it's not bare. Also, if regional articles are created, this map will need appropriate shading for the various regions.
  • '''More Pictures''' ? The article ''could'' get a couple more pictures. At a minimum, they need to be spread out.
  • '''Lukewarm'''. This is a great nomination, and we could do all these tasks and make it a much better guide. My only worries would be that we could probably move through all these tasks rather quickly, since the island nation is so small, and the amount of content is not huge. But that's not to say we shouldn't do this—it could definitely work. --Peter <small>Talk</small> 02:06, 23 April 2009 (EDT)
  • Iran

Since my previous nomination didn't offer enough to do, I'll propose Iran. I've been reading a bit about Iran lately and think it is a very interesting country to improve?especially to the negative Western perception.

A decent article, but there are several big problems with it:

  • '''Regions''' ? The country needs to be divided into appropriate regions. Of the other language versions, the [http://wikitravel.org/it/Iran Italian version] has broken the country into Azerbaijan (north-west), Western Iran, Central Iran, Eastern Iran, Caspian Sea, & Hormuz regions, even giving cities/provinces in those regions. I'd probably add Baluchistan to that. You can use [http://translate.google.com/translate_t# Google translate] to help translate the text.
  • *'''Update Map''' ? After appropriate regions are created, the map should be updated to show those regions.
  • '''Move 'Other Destinations' content''' ? The 'Other Destinations' section is filled with information that ought to be either moved to appropriate cities, or moved to a new (can't think of a name) section under 'Understand'.
  • '''Understand''' ? Iran has a very rich history and certainly deserves decent 'History' section under 'Understand'. Due to the Western (or at least American) perception that Iran is nothing but terrorists & anti-semites, we should probably add a 'Culture' section deriding those perceptions (from what I've read in articles/blogs, most Iranians are quite hospitable & friendly to Westerners...even Americans). There is some content about this buried in the 'Stay Safe' section...but that should be moved to the top to be more prominent. At the end, mention to see the 'Respect' section for more.
  • '''Buy''' ? This section needs to be cleaned up & should include some things which are great to purchase in Iran.
  • '''Stay Safe'''? This section has a lot of text...can be broken into sections or add a picture to make it more eye-pleasing.
  • '''Pictures''' ? There are just 5 pictures on this lengthy article. More quality pictures are needed to make the large blocks of text more attractive. Pictures of historical sites, mosques, the countryside, etc. The Tehran article has a few good pictures.
  • '''Support'''. Iran can be a fantastic place to visit. Fascinating history, center of several empires that at certain times included most of what are now Central Asia and South Asia, plus large chunks of territory further West. Huge influence other other countries. Plenty of culture and artifacts: carpets, architecture, rugs, music, carpets, metalwork, rugs, woodwork, carpets, a long history of poetry, and of course Persian carpets.

It is also on major travel routes. Among our itineraries Marco Polo, Silk Road and Istanbul to New Delhi overland all pass through Iran. Pashley 00:33, 6 May 2009 (EDT)

    Kyoto

There seems to be alot of contributors interested in Kyoto at the moment, and it's a big international destination with loads of visitors which increases the chances of luring new contributes to chip in, so maybe we could emulate the success of Rome with this one. Efforts to districtify the city is currently ongoing on the talk page.
  • Agree on district borders (pretty much there already)
  • Create a district map - nearly all major streets are plotted on osm.org, so creating one should be pretty trivial (I'll volunteer on that one, when my life hopefully calms down again soon)
  • Move listings to the appropriate districts
  • Scour flickr for cc licensed pictures for the new districts
  • Beef up content for the new districts, so we don't end up with new half empty districts.
  • --Stefan (sertmann) <small>Talk</small> 09:42, 25 May 2009 (EDT)
  • '''Support''' As you said, a lot of the current contributors are familiar with this city and it's popular enough that random visitors should also be able to contribute. Do you think the districtification should occur prior to it being the CotM? At any rate, a concensus is close to being reached, and a map would definitely make it the more clear. ChubbyWimbus 09:49, 25 May 2009 (EDT)
  • '''Support''', on the same grounds cited by ChubbyWimbus. My own view is that we should aim to lay down the borders and have the district sub-pages up by the time Kyoto is named CotM (in the hope it gets that far, of course!), so that collaborative work can focus primarily on the last three tasks (moving listings, adding district-specific pictures, adding district-specific content). That's just my two cents as a newbie, though; I'd be very grateful for veteran advice. --Diego de Manila 03:44, 26 May 2009 (EDT)
  • '''Support'''. I like the process of finding something people are currently collaborating and which has activity, and making it COTM. I think it will work well. And Kyoto is a great city that will benefit from a great guide. --inas 07:58, 26 May 2009 (EDT)
  • Updating the Collaboration of the Month

At the beginning of each month, the Collaboration of the Month needs to be updated. Any registered user can do so. To update the current Collaboration of the Month you should:

    # Remove the current collaboration from this page and move the next one up. # Move the current collaboration to the previous collaborations page. # Remove the Cotm template from the current Collaboration of the Month pages and add the pcotm template to their talk pages. # Add the Cotm template to the next collaboration article. # Update the :Template:Current collaboration with the current COTM. # Clear the cache for the Wikitravel:Project page by clicking [http://wikitravel.org/wiki/en/index.php?title=Wikitravel:Project&action=purge here] # Clear the cache for the Main Page by clicking [http://wikitravel.org/wiki/en/index.php?title=Main_Page&action=purge here] # Schedule some new Collaborations, there should be about 4 months worth upcoming in the queue
