It is easily reached from Edinburgh and Glasgow, and is well worth a one day trip.
The Palace, Study and Town House are in the care of the National Trust for Scotland [http://www.nts.org.uk]. These are open afternoons only between Mid-March and the end of October. The restored town is a rare example of a 17th century burgh.
