'''Dornod''' is a province in Eastern Mongolia.
Regions
Dornod, meaning "East" in Mongolian, is the eastern-most aimag in Mongolia. The population is approximately 70,000, of which, about 45,000 live in the aimag center, Choibalsan. Dornod is predominantly flat and barren steppe land, the exceptions being in the far northern and far eastern regions. This expansive steppe land provides habitat for rare species of cranes, as well as endangered gazelle and wolves. Summers are short (only about two and a half months) and hot; the cool dry Fall begins in August and ends in October; winter is long (from mid-October to April) and harsh, with temperatures regularly dropping to -40 degrees Celsius and lower; and Spring is cool and windy, with periodic dust storms. The economy has gone from collective herding and farming, and industrial felt and carpet production during the communist years up to 1989, to today's free-market, independent herding, and small-scale felt production. Unemployment soared after the withdrawal of several thousand Russian military personel in the late 1980s and early 1990s, coupled with the dissolution of the Soviet Union, the foremost importer of Mongolian commodities. Today unemployment rates in the aimag center, Choibalsan, remain no lower than 40%.
