Sun Zhong Shan or Sun Yat Sen, who led the 1911 revolution against the Manchus and became president of China was from Zhongshan. His former home is now a museum.
At one point, Zhongshan was the adminstrative capital of a region that included Zhuhai. Then Zhuhai became a Special Economic Zone with its own administration, and now it is the most important city of the area. Foreign staff of Zhongshan factories often prefer to live in Zhuhai and commute.
One can reach Zhongshan by:
1) Metro bus or taxi Zhuhai 2) Long distance bus from most cities in Guang Dong Province. 3) Ferry from Hong Kong.
There is a Zhuhai-Guangzhou light rail line under construction, with a connection to Zhongshan. This expected to be in service in 2009.

Zhong Shan is a sleepy town considered small by Chinese standards. There are hot spring resorts and small lakes and golf courses but by most accounts it is not place that most foreigners visit to see very very interesting things. Place in China like Xian, Guiling, Shanghai, Beijing, Kunming, Lijiang, Tibet, Innner Mongolia etc... offer mach many more of the Chinese "Experience" for the traveler.
Zhong Shan is not so much a place to see interesting things.
It is more a place to raise a family/children and retire.
There is a new college of '''Traditional Chinese Herbal Medicine''' in the hills southeast of the city.
There are foreign companies in Zhong Shan but there are not employment opportunites that bigcities Beijing, Hong Kong, Guangzhou or Shenzhen offering for expats. The standard for english teaching is below the national standard. Teaching full time, expats usually take privates to make more.
There is an antique furniture area is located in the Zhongshan Sanxiang Guhe area. The prices are high by national standards and expats should bargain fierce (hire local to assist) as Chinese business people good barigainer.
Most of the pieces look like real antiques, but are actually newly made replicas from tropical rain forest wood.

Beware: Chinese bars/disco are extreme loud and you can lose your hearing if you are frequent guest. Expat bars are one of few places that one can have nice beer and still speaking.
