The trail was recognized in 2007 by Maoz Inon, an Israeli entrepreneur, and David Landis, an American hiking specialist. It is currently managed and promoted largely by the work of volunteers, and is a non-profit project.
The trail is free for anyone who wants to hike it and camp along the way. While parts of the trail pass over other trails that have blazes (such as the Israel National Trail), the actual Jesus Trail is not yet blazed.
