Outside the ski season, travellers are well advised to carry their own food.

There are several ski lodges on the mountain as well as accommodation around the mountain at places such as National Park, Ohakune Turangi and Waiouru.
The Department of Conservation operates a number of back country huts in the area.
Stay safe
Be aware that Ruapehu is an active volcano. There is currently a long term ''Lahar'' warning for the crater lake, which is expected to flood in 2005. Pay attention to any public safety warnings or notices in the whole area.
Because of the changeable weather, travellers in this area should carry warm clothing, even in summer.
