'''Salvage''' is one of seven communities on the Eastport Peninsula. The Eastport Area has been popular with Newfoundland's holiday-makers for years. The peninsula is located on the north-western border of Terra Nova National Park and is famed for its sandy beaches, beautiful scenery and traditional Newfoundland outport heritage. You may wish to note, the 'vage' in Salvage is pronounced so that it rhymes with 'cage'.

Salvage was named one of Canada's 10 Prettiest Towns by Harrowsmith Country Life.

Understand

The oldest community on the Road to the Beaches, Salvage was permanently settled in the early 1800's by European settlers. Prior to this, English migratory fishermen visited the area during the summer months of the 1600's.

The name "Salvage" is thought to have been named by early Spanish fishermen who referred to the area as ''salvaje'', which is the Spanish word for "savage." The Beothuck people likely frequented the Salvage Bay area because of its close proximity to their summer settlement. It is likely that it was these individuals whom early Europeans referred to as "savages." Salvage eventually became a well-known fishing and trading center in Bonavista Bay, sending many young men to the Labrador fishery.

As a picturesque community nestled amongst the rocks shaped by glaciers, Salvage provides breathtaking scenery for the photographer. Colorful homes scattered around a backdrop of rock and boreal forest pay homage to the determination and cheerfulness of Salvage residents. Numerous fishing stages dot the sheltered shoreline, creating one of the best examples of Newfoundland_fs fishing villages.

The Fishermen_fs Museum and craft store was once the home of the Heffern family, which has been converted to display artifacts from as early as the early 1600's.
