Walking is the only means of transportation once you have gotten to Red Bank, unless you have a car or bicycle.
The famous Count Basie Theatre was founded in 1926. It is named for the musician of the same name. It hosts plays, political commentators, and has hosted arena-scale concerts by world-famous musical acts. It attracts crowds primarily from the bohemian-like town of Red Bank and its neighboring communities, referred to as the New Jersey tri-cities (Long Branch, Red Bank and Asbury Park), as well as from nearby New York City. The theatre is known for first class entertainment in an intimate setting, and is divided into four sections: the large orchestra, the small lodge, the large balcony, and the smaller upper balcony.
There is a reasonably well-stocked independent record store, Jack's Music Shoppe, on Broad Street. It is located on Monmouth Street. For musical instruments, try the upstairs and back of the first floor in this store, and for a wider variety of guitars and amps try Monmouth Music, located on Monmouth Street.
The famous director Kevin Smith (director of "Clerks", "Mallrats", "Chasing Amy", "Dogma", "Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back", and "Jersey Girl") has a comic store here, Jay & Silent Bob's Secret Stash, which is on Broad Street. It has a lot of collector's merchandise from the movies, as well as props from the movies. In addition, it carries a large number of comic books, graphic novels, action figures. Another place for collector's is Fameabilia, on Monmouth Street. There are is an astounding amount of signed pictures and sports equipment.
Funk & Standard on Monmouth Street has various odds and ends to check out.
When in town I never skip the Siam Garden Thai restaurant. Good sate and original curries, but a little pricey.
Danny's Stakehouse across the street is also a good place for lonely business travelers. Good shushi served at the bar. Good wines and coctails to complete the picture.
There is a Starbucks on the corner of Broad Street and White Street. On the opposite side of Broad Street and a little further down is No Ordinary Joe's cafe. Its menu is smaller than Starbucks, but is an independent place. This is a good place for those sick of the taste of or disillusioned with Starbucks. Also serving good java is Zebu, on Broad Street. For more about Zebu, see the "Eat" section of this page.
