    Talk

Rhode Island accents in South County usually aren't as strong as they are further north.

    Get in

Rhode Island has three '''AMTRAK''' [http://www.amtrak.com/] train stations - South Kingstown (close to the beaches of Narragansett and Charlestown), Providence (in downtown Providence), and Westerly (close to the RI/CT border).

By car the South County area is traversed by '''Interstate 95'''.

    Get around

  • Routes 1 & 1A are the primary means of travel north/south through south county, with Rte 1A being the scenic route along the local '''beaches''' and so is extremely busy during the summer season. [http://www.dot.state.ri.us/]
  • Rte 138 is the dominant east/west route and travels through South Kingstown and by the University of Rhode Island.
  • South County is served by '''RIPTA Bus, (Rhode Island Public Transit Authority)''', Phone: ''+1'' 401-781-9400, [http://www.ripta.com/]. M-F 6:30AM-9PM, Sa - 8:00AM-6:30PM, Su 11AM-6:30PM. A single ride on RIPTA costs $1.50.

    Beaches

  • South County's main attraction during the warmer months is its many miles of coastline, which includes a number of beautiful public beaches. Daily passes are available for residents, non-residents and seniors, and range from $3 to $14. Season passes range from $15 to $60. The beaches are free (but unguarded) before Memorial Day and after Labor Day.
  • Larger beaches such as '''Narragansett Town Beach''' (Narragansett), '''Misquamicut State Beach''' (Westerly) and '''Scarborough State Beach''' (Narragansett) can attract very large crowds, especially on weekends or holidays, and for good reason. However, there are also many smaller, more secluded beaches that may be significantly less crowded, such as '''East Matunuck State Beach''' (South Kingstown), '''Watch Hill Beach''' (Westerly) and '''Napatree Point''' (Westerly - no charge to enter).
  • Foliage

  • South County enjoys a brief, late period of gorgeous fall colors. The main roads throughout the region, such as Rt. 1, Rt. 138, Rt. 2 and Ministerial Road (Rt. 110) make for enjoyable drives during the autumn season.
  • Points of Interest

Sights to see throughout the year include:

  • '''Narragansett Towers''', Narragansett.
  • '''Point Judith Lighthouse''', Narragansett. The picturesque Point Judith lighthouse marks the west side of the entrance to Narragansett Bay.
  • '''Wilcox Park''', Westerly. A beautiful Victorian-era walking park.

'''Farm stands''' are also easily found throughout South County, especially along Rt. 138 and Rt. 2.
