The '''Auckland Region''' is in the North Island of New Zealand. Centred on the Auckland metropolitan area, the region includes ruggedly beautiful west coast beaches and harbors, the more sheltered inlets and beaches of the east coast, the islands of the Hauraki Gulf and the hiking trails of the native bush-clad Waitakere and Hunua ranges.

    Understand

    Get in

Entry by air is through the Auckland International Airport.

Central Auckland is easy to navigate, and due to its compact size quite possible to do on foot. Greater Auckland is a different matter, as the city covers an area comparable to London, without a particularly effective public transport system.

There is a sporadic suburban rail system - that is getting better and will improve as the 2011 Rugby World Cup approaches. Buses are plentiful, but hold on tight as the training and standards of the drivers leaves something to be desired.

Transportation in Auckland is dominated by the car. They are cheap to rent, although the cost of fuel has doubled over the last three years. Be aware that the standard of driving is universally poor and if renting be sure to get the best insurance cover possible

'''Intercity Coachlines''' [http://www.intercitycoach.co.nz/] operate NZ's national bus network with many departure and arrives in to Auckland every day of the year. Tickets can be purchased online or throughout the country at numerous agents including the i-site network. A cheaper option is '''nakedbus.com''' [http://nakedbus.com/] which also has daily services across the country, including to/from Auckland Airport. Fares start at $1 if you book early enough.
