'''Pudong''' (_Y?) is Shanghai's newest district on the eastern side of the river, chock full of gleaming skyscrapers rising out of what was mere farmland only 15 years ago.
Get in
Metro Line 2's Lujiazui Station is in the middle of central Pudong, within easy walking distance to both the Pearl Tower and the Jin Mao Tower. The maglev (which finishes running at 9PM, but only run 430km/h till 5PM) from Pudong Airport connects to Longyang Rd Station, a few stops away by metro. Expect to pay around ¥150 by taxi.
The cheapest way to get to Pudong is to take the ferry from the Bund, near Yan'an Donglu, at the price of ¥0.8 and even that only when heading eastbound!
A much more expensive way of crossing is the '''Bund Sightseeing Tunnel''' (north of the Peace Hotel), basically an overpriced 647m underground travellator featuring several minutes of blinking lights at ¥40 a pop. (On the other hand, if $4 won't break you, it's a really fun and unique experience, travelling under the river to the music, whale songs, and poetry while psychedelic lights flash. A not to be missed tourist trap!)
Yan'an tunnel takes you to Pudong by cab, but expect a long line of cars throughout the day. During rush hours (this also means between 5PM-9PM in the weekend) you can get stuck up to 30 min... It's not a toll-tunnel anymore, but if that was an improvement?
See
Oriental Pearl TV Tower. ________ ''Dongfang Minzhuta''. entury Avenue.. ttp://www.opg.cn. rom 85 to 150RMB. Built in 1994, it is the 3rd tallest tower in the world. Featuring 11 garish pink balls enlightened by the famous Chinese poem (____________?''Da Zhu Xiao Zhu Luo Yu Pan'' which describes the most beautiful sound when the pearls of different size fall on to a jade plate), the tower has become a symbol of the new Shanghai. A complex pricing system depends on where you want to go and what you want to see, but entry to the ball #2 at 263 meters and its outdoor viewing platform at 259m will set you back ¥85. The top ball at 350 meters will cost you more. Space city at 90 meters can be missed, but Shanghi History Museum offers a glimpse into the past of the city.
Shanghai Municipal Museum. is located underneath the Pearl TV Tower and costs 35 Yuan without access to the tower's viewing platforms. The museum recreates interiors of houses and shops from the farming era up to the swinging 1930s, has many miniatures of Shanghai's most impressive (colonial) buildings, and also displays vintage cars, old advertisements, and so on. Although light on actual historical information, its definitely worth a visit, and surprisingly big.
Jinmao Tower. _______. entury Avenue, Pudong.. ttp://www.jinmao88.com/en. China's third tallest skyscraper stands just beside Oriental Pearl TV Tower. The tower houses the Grand Hyatt Shanghai and features a 31-story atrium that starts in the jazz lounge on the 57th story and rises up like a space station. An Italian restaurant Cucina, on the 55th floor offers spectacular views of the Bund and the rest of old Shanghai. For about the same cost as going up in the Pearl Tower, you can enjoy a gourmet pizza lunch here and savor virtually the same view. There is also a restaurant on the 88th floor, which is the top floor and China's second highest visitor platform. Entry fee is 50 Yuan regular and 25 Yuan student. As student ID they accept international ISIC cards and local Chinese undergraduate ID's, but reject Chinese graduate student IDs. Alternatively, head for one of the Grand Hyatt's many bars (see Drink).
Shanghai Ocean Aquarium. ake exit 1 on the Lujiazui stop on Metro Line 2, walk towards the Pearl TV tower and look to your right.. ttp://www.sh-aquarium.com/en_index.asp. AM-6PM (9PM in summer).. ntrance is steep at ¥120, with some discounts for children.. This is an entertaining and up to standards exhibition over two floors, including a system of glass tunnels that lets you get up close and personal with sharks.
Century Park. as it's own stop on Metro Line 2.. 0RMB. This is Shanghai's biggest park, with its own stop on Metro Line 2. Unfortunately, many areas have vegetation that is still under development, have too much concrete and paved roads, or both. Still a good and relaxing get-away.
The Science Museum. as it's own stop on Metro Line 2.. Focuses on Western Science. Entertaining and educational for children.
Shanghai World Financial Centre Tower. WFC. 00 Century Ave, Pudong.. ext door to the Jinmao Tower.. 86 21 68777878. ww.swfc-observatory.com. 50RMB. Newly opened in October 2009, this is the tallest building in Shanghai. If you exclude spires and flagpoles, then it contends for the tallest building in the world, at least for a few months. There are 3 viewing levels on floors 94, 97 and 100. The observation level allows you to look down on the tall neighboring Jinmao and Oriental Perl towers. However, a better view of the river and the Bund can be obtained from the lower sphere of the Oriental Perl than form the SWFC. In addition, strong floodlights on the top of the Jinmao building spoil most attempts to photograph the view. The upper section of the SWFC contains a large hotel. An alternative to the 100th floor observation deck is to go to one of the hotel bars or restaurants on or near the 98th floor.
