Understand
This area has in the past been very wealthy. The rivers flowing down from the five valleys powered mills making wool (from the sheep that used to cover the surrounding hills).
Stroud went into quite a decline in the early 90s, but has bounced back. The local economy is doing well and many towns have been having facelifts.
The area still retains its age-old charm, even in the face of modern developments and industry.

Get around
The buses in this area are quite attrocious, which leaves only two choices:
On foot: The scenery around this area is magneficent, with the quienticential(sp?) English fields and hamlets. Well worth walking even if you have a car.
Car: This is probably the only way if you're not willing to walk. However, many of the hills around are very steep ("the W" from Nailsworth up to Amberley (Gloucestershire) is a good example).
