A small settlement at the edge of Par Sands between Par and Fowey at the bottom of Polmear Hill and half a mile from Twywardreath village.
In days gone by when there were higher sea levels and less silting up, Polmear had a small quay and a lime kiln. Now the settlement is approx 400m from the main beach car park on a small river which once may have been a ford at low tide.
Polmear contains a pub, the SHIP INN, an Indian restaurant, a bus stop and a post box.
The beach is a Local Nature Reserve with a variety of habitats and birdlife. In recent years, otters have been identified here.
The beach also hosts a caravan park with childrens play area, and seasonal cafe. Access for disabled persons is good around the caravan site and routes to the villages of Par and Polmear but poor to the beach which is made up of sand dunes and a sandy foreshore.
