'''Bromo-Tengger-Semeru National Park''' is in East Java, Indonesia.
Understand
The national park is named after its two mountains, Mount Semeru (the highest on Java) and Mount Bromo (the most popular).
The area around the mountain is inhabited by the '''Tenggerese''', the only Hindus left on the island of Java. The local form of religion is quite similar to that on Bali, but rather more low-key thanks to the population pressure of Muslims all around, with the only visible manifestations of faith being a few rather basic temples (''pura''). Still, for many visitors, the sight of angular-faced, sunburned, moustachioed Tenggerese wrapped in poncho-like blankets, trotting about on ponies with craggy mountains as the backdrop more resembles Peru than Indonesia!
Get in
The nearest major airport is in Surabaya, three hours away by car (and more by bus). The nearest larger towns are Probolinggo, on the north coast of Java, and Malang, to the west of the park.
Get around
From the village, Cemero Lawang, you can easily walk to Bromo and Mt. Penanjakan, where you can view the sunrise in the morning. Bromo-Tengger-Semeru National Park is one of the best locations in the world to see the sunrise. The sunrise is very beautiful, do you know that? Villagers offer horseback rides and you can also book a jeep to take you around the area.
See
By far the most common activity in the park is visiting the collapsed but still smouldering Mount Bromo, located in the unearthly moonscape of a caldera known as the Sand Sea (''Pasir Laut'').
Do
Climbing Mount Semeru (3676m) is much more strenuous — and, due to the volcanic fumes and danger of eruption, more dangerous — exercise. Only possible during the dry season.
To view a warm sunrise over Bromo and Mt. Semeru, climb Mt. Penanjikan starting out at 3 a.m. to catch the sunrise at around 5 a.m. You can decide to wait at the quiet first viewpoint, which only takes about 45-60 minutes to hike to, rather than hiking to the top. Jeep companies can also drive you to the summit.
Eat
The hotels and guesthouses all have restaurants. There are also some warungs on the main street offering cheap local dishes.
Drink
Stay safe
There are plenty of accommodation options around the mountain. Facilities at Cemoro Lawang side of the caldera are rather basic, but there are good hotels in Sukapura and Probolinggo such as Java Banana Bromo [http://java-banana.com], Bromo Cottages [http://www.bromocottages.com/], Cemoro Indah [http://www.bromotrail.com] .
Get out
Wait for a minibus to take you back to Probolinggo where you can catch a bus back to Surabaya or Malang from the main bus terminal.
