The City of Silay is known as the ''"Paris of Negros"'' because of it's Gothic architecture and Spanish inspired houses along Cinco de Noviembre St. More than 30 of these houses have been declared a historical landmark. The city is one of the Top 25 destinations of the Philippines as declared by the Department of Tourism. Silay City is the 2nd city in the Philippines that have been declared as a museum city, next to Vigan in Ilocos Sur.
The opening of the New Bacolod-Silay Airport pave way for the city to be the air hub of Negros Occidental as it is located within the city borders. The new airport has one of the most breathtaking and scenic views of the Negros Occidental mountain ranges, including Mt. Silay, while on an airport landing or take off.
Alternative means on getting out of the airport are via Jeepney or by tricycle which is also very cheap. You just have to hop and drop off at the city center of Silay and you may hop on affordable Jeepneys going to Bacolod City or to any big buses/coaches going to other different cities of the province.
The Rizal St. is the major and longest street in the City and is part of national highway chain of the country. This is where you can commonly see Jeepneys, Sugar Cane trucks, and big provincial buses passing by. It is in Negros Occidental that you'll see not just ordinary cars but also the luxurious ones. Negros Occidental was once the richest province way back in the 1970's because of it's main product Sugar. To date, the province is still the Sugar Bowl of the Philippines.
