'''Hungarian''' is a spoken in a linguistic island around Hungary (Hungary, parts of Austria, Slovakia, Romania, Ukraine, Slovenia, Croatia and Serbia). it is surrounded by Germanic, Romance and Slavic languages, and borrows heavily from them (the o, the u and the knack for combining two-words-in-one from German, the soft sign from Slavs), but none of which it is related to. Hungarian's distant relatives, both spoken in Europe, are Finnish and Estonian. It shares with them the following properties:
  • There is no grammatical gender.
  • The first syllable is almost always stressed (except foreign words).
  • Vowel and consonant length are distinctive; i.e., the meanings of words change when they are altered.
  • Words are marked by case endings ("suffixes") which take on vowels similar to those in the words (e.g., ''a vonat Buda'''ra''' vagy Pest'''re''' kozlekedik'' = ''the train goes '''to''' Buda or Pest''). The importance of the similarity of vowels is a common aspect among languages which share a feature known as '''vowel harmony'''. The rules of vowel harmony are quite complex, but it basically consists of "front" vowels being placed with "front" vowels and "back" vowels placed with "back".
  • Remember, ONE difference in pronounciation or even vowel length can lead to misinterpretation.

    Pronunciation guide

    Vowels

Vowel length is indicated by the acute accent. Words are often distinguished only by vowel length: e.g., ''k'''o'''r'' "disease" vs. ''k'''o'''r'' "age".

    ; a : like 'o' in "not" (a very deep "o") __ [SYMBOL: a] ; a : like 'a' in "f'''a'''ther" __ [SYMBOL: a] ; e : like 'e' in "l'''e'''t" __ [SYMBOL: e] ; e : like 'a' in "s'''a'''y" __ [SYMBOL: ey] ; i : like i in "machine", but shorter __ [SYMBOL: i] ; i : like 'ee' in "s'''ee'''m" __ [SYMBOL: ee] ; o : like 'o' in "'''o'''r" __ [SYMBOL: o] ; o : like 'o' in "s'''o'''" __ [SYMBOL: oa] ; o : like 'o' in German "sch'''o'''n" or English "sh'''u'''n" (with rounded lips) __ [SYMBOL: o] ; ? : like 'o' but longer __ [SYMBOL: o?] ; u : like 'ou' in "c'''ou'''ld" __ [SYMBOL: ou] ; u : like 'oo' in "m'''oo'''n" __ [SYMBOL: oo] ; u : like 'u' in German "'''u'''ber" (like "ee" with rounded lips) __ [SYMBOL: ?] ; ? : like "u" but longer __ [SYMBOL: ??]

    Consonants

Only the consonants having sounds different from those in English are noted here. Consonant length is distinctive: ''tizenegyedik'' "eleventh" vs. ''tizennegyedik'' "fourteenth". Consonants written with two letters are doubled by doubling the first letter: ''asszony'' "woman". Exception: ''tizennyolc'' is ''tizen-nyolc''. Think of pronouncing 'Ben Nevis' with the two n's pronounced separately, with a split-second pause between them.

    ; c : like 'ts' in ha'''ts''' __ [SYMBOL: ts] ; cs : like 'ch' in '''ch'''air __ [SYMBOL: ch] ; dzs : like 'dg' in ba'''dg'''e __ [SYMBOL: j] ; gy : like 'j' in ma'''j'''or or 'de y' in ma'''de y'''our __ [SYMBOL: dj] ; j : like 'y' in '''y'''es __ [SYMBOL: y] ; ly : ''same'' as j; except at the end of a word, where it is a palatised l ; ny : as in ca'''ny'''on or 'n' in se'''n'''or __ [SYMBOL: ny] ; r : always rolled like as in Spanish "Ma'''r'''ia: less guttural than German ; s : as in '''s'''ugar __ [SYMBOL: sh]. It is easy to confuse this with sz! ; sz : like 's' in '''s'''ee __ [SYMBOL: s] ; ty : like the "t" in "pot", but shorter; y is a soft sign ; zs : like 'g' in '''g'''enre or 's' in plea'''s'''ure __ [SYMBOL: zh]
