Stay safe
It is inadvisable for a tourist to wander the streets of Lae alone, even in crowded shopping areas (crime). But for little or no money, a hotel guard may accompany a lone traveler for a short walk to go shopping or to the bank.

Get out
Once a week, a small ship leaves Lae for Umboi Island (stopping for cargo at Finschhafen). Many Papua New Guineans use the two small ships that make this cruise; few foreign tourists use the ships as they are Spartan and used partially for cargo. Nevertheless, it is the only regular way to get to Umboi Island, the home of the legendary "ropen."
