For local food try Night Market. It is about 2 km from hotel zone (Mercure, Hyatt), bemo costs 10.000 rps (June 2007), for walkers just follow the main street. As for hygiene, food is absolutely safe. You may be able to remember the local names ''nasi'' for rice and ''mie'' for noodles, but with the rest, it is easier just to show what you want to eat. Expect one serving for maximum 10.000 rps and the same price for large beer (local, but surprisingly good).
Nice experience is ''warung'' - a kind of 3-wheels cart with food, my favorite is soup ''bakso''. Expect bill 5.000 rps. Sometimes locals bring you chairs frome their homes or shops, so you can enjoy your dinner directly on rush street sitting with locals on wooden chairs.
'''Prima Cottage''' Prices start at about 20 USD a night. Price includes wireless internet access plus breakfast. The complex, which consists of regular hotel rooms and cottages, also has a pool. www.primacottage.com
