Fees/Permits
Climbing Yushan requires both a park entry permit from the park authorities and a mountain climbing permit from the police. Both have to be applied for by mail well in advance, and knowledge of Chinese will come in very handy.
An expat-run group,[http://www.barking-deer.com Barking Deer Adventures], can assist in the applying for the permit and trek logistics.
That said, quite a few Westerners have managed to climb the peak with no permits, particularly when using the longer route from Tungpu. This runs the risk of being caught and fined, if a rescue is required all costs must be paid by the offender.

See
If you're content with just seeing Yushan, the best thing to do is to head over to neighboring Alishan and witness the famous sunrise from there.
Do
There are two basic routes to the top:
Main route from New Cross-Island Highway. The trail starts at Yushan National Park HQ (2600m) and leads to the top in 10 km, with a hut very near the top.
Tungpu to the summit, 23 km and 2800 vertical meters.
