'''Grande Cache''' [http://www.grandecache.ca/] is a town in the Alberta Rockies, Canada.

Get in

The drive to '''Grande Cache''' is quite possibly one of the most beautiful drives you will ever take. From Calgary you will take Highway 1, the Trans-Canada Highway, to the entrance of Banff National Park. You will usually pay a fee to enter the park, so bring some Canadian currency. From there the drive is straight up the middle of the Canadian rockies, through both Banff and Jasper National Parks. The scenery in this area is amazing. Crystal clear streams, white-capped mountains, large glaciers, and plenty of wildlife around every turn. Upon reaching the town of Jasper, head East towards Hinton on 16. Hinton will be the last city before reaching Grande Cache, so prepare accordingly. From Hinton, take 40 North into Grande Cache. From Edmonton go west on Highway 16 or 16A to Hinton, then go north on the Highway Fourty until you hit Grande Cache!

The roads can be congested during peak season, and the steep grades can be demanding on the engine and brakes. In addition, the gas can be overpriced. An alternate route, with less scenery, would be to leave Calgary and head North to Edmonton then West to Hinton.

There is really only one reason to visit Grande Cache: the outdoor activities. The surrounding area provides ample opportunities for backpacking, hiking, horseback riding, and even golf. There are short trails for novice hikers and many peaks that can be reached during a day hike. For longer trips, Wilmore Wilderness Area provides a solitude rarely found in more popular backpacking destinations. For those not inclined to carry all their belongs on their back, local outfitters offer guided horseback excursions into the wilderness.

  • '''Canadian Death Race''', [http://www.canadiandeathrace.com/]. From the website it is clear that this is no ordinary race: "You must truly have the curiosity of a cat, the constitution of an ox, and the spirit of adventure, although your friends and loved ones may have a completely different description of your mental health. The course consists of 125 km, three mountain summits and over 17,000 ft of elevation change as well as the crossing of a major river at our spectacular Hell's Gates canyon at the confluence of the Smoky and Sulphur Rivers."
