    As of 2001 India census,[2] Chamba had a population of 20,312. Males constitute 52% of the population and females 48%. Chamba has an average literacy rate of 81%, higher than the national average of 59.5%; with male literacy of 85% and female literacy of 77%. 10% of the population is under 6 years of age. Chamba town is situated on the banks of the river Ravi which is a tributary of the Trans-Himalayan river Indus. The hub of all activity in Chamba town is the Chaugan, a fine grassy sward, about half a mile long and eighty yards wide, and here is held the Minjar fair, every year, in the month of August.

    Chamba town is not very big so walking around the town is the best option. There are temples all around town and up on the hill-locks. The Chowgan is the most important part of the town with lush green grass.

    There is a small market in the middle of the town, which has over 200 shops built around parks of different size and a newly built complex by the Museum. The market opens 6 days a week (Mon-Sat) at 9am and closes at 8pm.

    Local delicacies include Madra, which is made from red-kidney beans in a gravy of curd (yoghurt). It's prepared on special occasions and is prepared and served on order at Hotel Aroma Palace's restaurant.

    Chamba town has a few outlets (shops and bars) where you can buy cheap liquor. Beer is generally served at Cafe Ravi View after 8pm.
