'''Krabi Province''' is on the west coast of Southern Thailand, and shares borders with Nakhon Si Thammarat Province, Phang Nga Province, Satun Province and Surat Thani Province, as well as the Andaman Sea.
Understand
Krabi, a coastal province, abounds with countless natural attractions that never fail to impress tourists. Such attractions include white sandy beaches, crystal clear water, fascinating coral reefs, caves and waterfalls, as well as, numerous islands.
The distinguishing feature of both Krabi and neighboring Phang Nga is the massive '''limestone karsts''', rising vertiginously out of the flat rice paddies on land and as islands from the sea. Add in some gorgeous '''''beaches''''' and excellent '''''scuba diving''''' and '''''rock climbing''''', and it's little wonder that tourism in the area has been booming.
While less commercialized than neighboring Phuket, Krabi Province cannot be described as undiscovered: it receives two million visitors a year, and the major tourist areas cater extensively for foreigners.
History
From archaeological discoveries, it is believed that Krabi was one of the oldest communities in Thailand dating back to the prehistoric period. It is believed that this town may have taken its name after the meaning of Krabi, which means sword. This may have stemmed from a legend that an ancient sword was unearthed prior to the city_fs founding.
2004 tsunami
Krabi Province was badly hit by the Indian Ocean tsunami of December 2004. A year later, signs of the damage are now hard to find in many places, but in the worst hit areas (especially Ko Phi Phi and Khao Lak) reconstruction is still ongoing.
Climate
Krabi is hot and humid all year round, with peak temperatures around April. The rainy season arrives in the fall and drizzles until about November, during which time many hotels and bars close, and the sea can get rough and some ferries (including those to Ko Lanta) stop running. High season is November-April inclusive, when it's a little cooler; the peak tourism period spans Christmas and New Year.
Talk
You can get around on English alone in the more touristic areas, although a few words of Thai will come in handy off the beaten track and will be much appreciated anywhere.
Geography
Bordering the Andaman Sea, Krabi is located 814 kilometers south of Bangkok and covers an area of 4,708 square kilometers. Its mountainous physical geography is broken by highlands and plains, covering more than 130 large and small islands, and abounding with mangrove forests. The Krabi River flows 5 kilometers through the town and into the Andaman Sea at Tambon Pak Nam. There are also klongs (canals) such as Klong Pakasai, Klong Krabi Yai, and Klong Krabi Noi, which all originate from Krabi_fs highest mountain Mount Phanom Bencha.

This makes them supremely manoeuvrable even in shallow waters, but they're a little underpowered for longer trips and you'll get wet if it's even a little choppy.
Tourism
This once unseen province has over the past decade, exploded onto the world_fs tourist destination map. In fact, the tourism sector is now the province_fs biggest earner. Inside the eastern and southern parts of the cave are ancient rock paintings of elephants and various types of boats, including a European sailboat, an Arabian sailboat, a sampan, a Chinese junk, a waterwheel sailing boat, and a steamboat. Learn
'''Rock Climbing'''
Krabi with its specific landscape is ideal for learning rock climbing, there are lots of different courses for beginners ? advanced. The courses available range from just half a day to three whole days in length. All instructors are properly qualified and well-experienced especially on Railey and Princess Cave beaches. There are at least ten rock climbing schools in Railay and Ton Sai, and several more in Ko Phi Phi.
In regards to advanced rock climbing - over the years, many Thai and foreign rock climbing experts have blazed routes up the many rock faces both on the mainland and Koh Phi Phi. There are now more than 600 routes.
'''Diving'''
With its crystal clear water, colourful coral and huge diversity of marine life, Krabi is a must-go for all those interested in diving. There are courses for anyone, regardless to whether they are near-on experts or complete beginners. PADI Open Water courses take around three to four days to complete and their instructors are a totally world-class standard.
Local Food
In general, Southern Thai food is renowned for its spiciness. Much of the cuisine has its origins in Malay, Indonesian and Indian food. Favourite dishes from the south include '''Indian-style Muslim curry (massaman)''', '''rice noodles in fish curry sauce (Khanom Jeen)''' and '''chicken birayani'''.
As for Krabi, reasonable priced and tasty seafood is obviously what most tourists long for when visiting a coastal province like Krabi. In this connection, '''the wing shell (?????????)''' is Krabi_fs famous cuisine. In addition, stirred fried '''Spotted Babylon (???????'''), which is found in mangrove forests, with chilies and basil is also famous. This cuisine is common in Krabi_fs restaurants. Another great Krabi taste is, of course, seafood. The Krabi beach areas have several restaurants with the 'catch of the day' displayed on ice outside. One can find all kinds of fish; juicy crabs and langoustines; shellfish, including giant oysters; as well as squid and lobsters.
Many foreign tourists regard Krabi Town as having one of the best food Night Markets in Thailand. There is plenty on offer and the prices are exteremly reasonable; much cheaper than any of the beach areas.
Local Products
Souvenirs of Krabi include turtle-dove cages, Toei Panan mats made from pandanus plants, shrimp paste, dried fish, and dried shrimp. They are sold in shops on Uttarakit Road.
Most of the goods sold to tourists in Krabi are just the same as what is found in Bangkok, such as: Thai silk scarves, carved wooden objects, silver jewellery, sarongs, leather goods etc. Only the prices in Krabi are relatively more expensive than the markets in Bangkok. It is recommended therefore to save shopping for Bangkok.
For those needing to shop in Krabi though, the best prices and discounts are to be found in Krabi town and especially at one of the two night markets. Thai handicrafts can also be purchased.

Live Music Joints play either Thai Folk or English classics
Karaoke clubs can be found all around and customers can either sing to everyone or rent a private room

Retirement
There are currently more than 1,000 foreigners living in Krabi, many of them retirees. A favourite spot for them is Ao Nang Beach, as it is not far from the provincial town.
There are some other retirees though, who reside in extremely quiet locations well away from the tourist scene. Of course, the cost of living off the beaten track is far cheaper.
In the author_fs opinion here, costs in Krabi have shot up over the past decade and it is now one of the land_fs more expensive retirement destinations (tourist areas)
Media/Contact
Nationwide television, cable TVs, local cable TV channels are available in Krabi province especially in tourist spots. International newspapers and magazines are available at some bookstores in downtown and tourist spots.
Landline telephones, satellite phones, all mobile phone systems, high-speed internet (ADSL), post offices and parcel services are available in Krabi province.
Local Tips
The best time to visit Krabi is between the months November to April when the area_fs climate is less hot than usual. During this period the island gets a lot of dry North Easterly winds, so giving dry blue skies and starry nights. Then, down on the beaches one can enjoy nice sea breezes. From June to November the area gets a lot of rainfall, more on average than the rest of the country. During this period the island gets a lot of moist South Westerly winds, so giving a mixture of dry days and wet ones. The sea stays at a warm 29 degrees Celsius all year round. Visitors however, coming in this period will find it cheaper.
'''Dos'''
Do buy gems from a reputable company.
Do carry around small change.
Do take water when jungle trekking and do drink a lot in such a hot climate.
Do bargain with vendors.
Do make sure your scuba diving instructor is fully accredited.
Do get off the beaten track.
Do try and learn a few words of the Southern dialect.
'''Don_fts'''
Don_ft take any boat unless it has life jackets.
Don_ft go into the jungle alone.
Don_ft go to the beach at night either to walk or swim.
Don_ft get involved with any narcotics.
Don_ft, as a woman, go topless on the beach.
