People in East Java speak Indonesian as well as Javanese, which they mix together at times.
The main transport hub is Surabaya, well connected with domestic flights and a few international ones, mostly to Singapore.
Major towns in the province, Surabaya and Malang are connected to Jakarta by various classes of accommodations suiting most budgets. However, the relatively popular tourist attractions of Mount Bromo and Pasir Putih beach are not rail-connected. It is possible, though, to travel to Bali by train from Surabaya and Malang, by virtue of a connecting ferry and bus service.
Frequent buses travel across Java and is the most reliable method to travel. All of these can be boarded at bus terminals in any major city and town.
Bromo and Mount Semeru are one of the main attractions in East Java. Other volcanic craters include Mount Kelud near Kediri and Kawah Ijen (Ijen Plateau) near Bondowoso .
There is a local type of fermented palm tree alcohol, called ''tuak''.
