I-94 begins at Billings and travels northeastward to the border of North Dakota.
I-94 continues southward through downtown Chicago, around Lake Michigan.
After a brief northward trek along the east coast of Lake Michigan, I-94 turns eastward and continues on that path all the way to Detroit. In the city it intersects with Interstate 96 and Interstate 75. On the way to its end it meets Interstate 69 at Port Huron, north of Detroit, before ending at Highway 402 at the Canadian border.
