    Get in

  • Highway: The I-5 freeway runs right through the southern part of the county, from the California border, through Ashland, Talent, Phoenix, Medford, Central Point, Gold Hill, and Rogue River. Highway 140 approaches the country from Klamath Falls, ending at Highway 62 in White City. Highway 62 comes from the north, giving access from Highhway 97 east of the Cascades, from Crater Lake and from Diamond Lake.
  • Bus: '''Greyhound''' buses running along Interstate 5 stop only in Medford.
  • Train: There is no Rail passenger service in Jackson County - the nearest AMTRAK station is in Klamath Falls.
  • Air: Jackson County-Medford Airport is at the north edge of Medford and is served by United Air Lines; Alaska Air Lines and various others at different times.
  • Get around

  • Local buses: The '''Rogue Valley Transit District''' runs buses between Medford and Ashland, Medford and White City, and around Medford.
  • Taxis: There are several companies in the county.
  • Gas prices: This is an expensive area for gas. Prices are generally cheaper in Medford than in Ashland. Fill up before heading south, cause prices are even higher in the Siskiyous.

    Eat

Ashland has a huge variety of restaurants for a town its size; Medford's eateries are more "white bread." Talent is developing as an eating town.

The Rogue Valley is the home of the "Royal Riviera" pears (or Anjous) - order them from Harry & David's for a couple bucks each, or get them for 39 cents a pound locally in season.

Tasty wild blackberries grow many places at the beginning of August/ end of July. Pick them for free along the lesser-traveled roads, or pay several dollars for a few ounces of less-flavorful ones in the stores.

    Drink

  • Water: Medford's water is from a large spring near Butte Falls. Very good in winter. In summer they supplement from the Rogue River and use more chlorine. Also try the Lithia water from the fountain in the plaza in Ashland. It's carbonated and highly mineralized.
  • Beer: There's several microbreweries in Ashland, as well as Wild River in Medford.
  • Stay safe

  • Plants: Watch for poison oak in this area.
  • Animals: Rattlesnakes exist but aren't seen all that often. Cougars have eaten the occasional housecat but have not attacked people. ''Cave canem...''
  • People: Not a particularly violent place overall though meth usage and production is high.
  • Weather: Very hot in July and August, but not as bad as the Sacramento Valley. Forest fire danger is high during this period.
  • Driving: Freeway traffic is often amazingly sedate. Traffic can slow a little at the north and south Medford interchanges at rush hour. The plaza in Ashland can be crowded, with parking a problem downtown.
